No timeline for tunnel boring to resume for the Evergreen Line

PORT MOODY (NEWS 1130) – After promising for months the tunnel boring machine working on the Evergreen Line would be working by the fall, the provincial government now says it doesn’t have a timeline.
The machine has been sitting idle for months; you can blame several sinkholes during construction for that.
Crews have said they were surprised at the conditions of the sandy soil that kept getting stuck in the machine. Repairs have been completed, but the province still doesn’t know when tunnel boring will resume again in the Port Moody area.
Despite all this, Transportation Minister Todd Stone is confident it will finish on time.
“I’m still doing everything that I can to make sure that the Evergreen project team — and through them, the contractors — understand that we still very much expect this project to be up and running within the timeframes that are understood by everyone at this point.”
“There is no question we have lost some time — that’s frustating, but we’re going to continue to do everything we possibly can to get this tunnel work done so that we can proceed with opening this critical addition to the Lower Mainland’s transit network,” he adds.
But in a statement from the ministry, it now says the end goal of the fall of 2016 could potentially be in jeopardy unless everything goes as planned in the coming months, but there are no guarantees.
“We will let people know if there are any further schedule implications. Despite the delay, the contract language is clear: EGRT is on the hook to address any challenges that may arise and will cover all the costs connected to this work. Government will continue to hold EGRT to their agreement.”
“This was a key part of the contract we signed in order to protect British Columbia taxpayers from the costs of any potential challenges. This includes all delays associated with the project and any extra costs related to the tunnel boring machine.”
