Eighteen months since our last update, and new renderings for 118-150 Robson Street by GBL Architects and Amacon have provided an excellent preview of how the multi-faceted, mixed-use development will look upon completion. Comprised of a 6-storey hotel, 29-storey residential tower, and a large, 3-storey heritage component, 118-150 Robson Street will have a lot of moving parts, the execution of each to demand a careful eye for detail.

Most significantly, the 29-storey, 131-unit, residential tower will rise from within the centre of the century-old Northern Electric Company Building. The exterior of the red-brick and stone-accented Art Deco industrial structure will be restored and retained, forming the main entrance, lobby, and retail space that will meet the street at ground level.

Located adjacent to BC Place, between Downtown and Yaletown, 118-150 Robson Street is well-situated for all of its intended uses, its centrality to be of equal benefit to residents, visitors, and shoppers. Owing to its location, the stacking effect of the mid-rise hotel to the high-rise tower, have been created in an effort to ease the transition from low to high, modern to heritage.

Furthermore, the setback between the tower and the heritage component will allow for the former to be less imposing, and the latter to shine post-restoration. Once complete, 118-150 Robson Street will be a welcome addition, evidence that heritage and new development can co-exist in harmony.

SkyriseVancouver will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
