Interesting that the Port Coquitlam spur doesn't seem to allow for trains to stop at Coquitlam Central Station, despite going right next to the it. If they build platforms for the PoCo spur next to the under-construction Coquitlam Central Station, then you'll have the problem of having to guess which platform will have the next inbound train.

Unless... they make a shared centre platform between the two spurs, and wrong-rail the Coquitlam Centre line for a bit (just like they're doing at Lougheed), to make both inbound lines use the centre platform, while the outbound lines use the side platforms.

Well, I guess it works after all.

Yeah, it's a bit strange - it's not, say, like Bridgeport Station with the wye "after" the centre platform station, whether both branches sharing that station.

The assumption is that they are thinking ahead, and think that one centre platform will not hold the potential loads in future - because Coquitlam Town Centre will be another regional town centre.

It looks like there will be a second platform on the Port Coquitlam spur, with the two adjacent outside platforms connected to allow a cross platform transfer from Port Coquitlam to Coquitlam.

As you mention, that may create some inconvenience for passengers transferring to the trains from buses, if there are 2 platforms headed to downtown.

I think someone else suggested wrong-railing too, but I don't think that will work for all movements.

Last time, we prebuilt a platform at Lougheed station for the Evergreen Line. This time, the drawing shows that we will be building 2 stub tracks and 2 support columns for future Poco extension that might not happen before the end of this century... Seems like our provincial government is quite committed to build skytrain everywhere :D

And this is what I gather from Appendix I - the potential track map for the line!
This document is even older though (dated 2011) - it still has Cameron station, so I just put it in!

Note: VSF = Vehicle Storage Facility... it is actually just lots of parallel tracks

Note: There will be no Cameron Station (or future station there).

Well, they could have and indicator at concourse to tell passenger which side they should go for the next train, I've seen some of those in HK MTR. Or maybe they'll make the entire Evergreen line to run on the left hand side of the track so both side of the center platform goes toward Vancouver. Something like this:

But actually, I'm more interested in the shape of the center platform. According to the plan, it will eventually become something like:

It would be almost 20 meters wide at the widest part! Oh, I almost can't wait for the PoCo extension, just to see what this funky platform look like when it is completed... :D

Well that's assuming they don't cheap out and build it out that way... It'll probably look like the one found here in Tobu-Nikko, Japan: https://maps.google.ca/maps/myplace...619982&spn=0.001242,0.002411&ctz=420&t=h&z=19

If that is indeed the track diagram, then yeah, wrong-railing is a bit odd. They'd need to wrong-rail all the way to Moody, but then only right-rail for two stations before crossing over again after Burquitlam. They would just as well wrong-rail the entire line.

Even that is a bit odd.
There's no real reason that PoCo -> Coquitlam should need a cross-platform transfer, when it means the opposite, Coquitlam -> PoCo is the longest transfer (and it creates the "which platform to downtown" issues). If they really go this route, then it will certainly be "because it was the easiest".

Coquitlam is supposed to be a Regional Town Centre on the north side of the Fraser River (counterpoint to Surrey being the main Regional City Centre south of the Fraser River).

So in the long term, there would be commuters coming from the east (Port Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows).
The morning commute (i.e. to Coquitlam, not PoCo) would be prioritized for a cross-platform transfer, whereas afternoon commutes are typically more forgiving on timeliness.

But it does create the "which platform" problem - which can be addressed by directional signs in the ticketing hall for "next train".

PS - that's similar to the way Lougheed Station will be set out - cross platform transfer from Coquitlam to Braid, down and up transfer for Braid to Coquitlam (but there's wrong-railing to get all Vancouver-bound trains to one platform) - this time prioritizing commutes to Surrey, since they'll have 2 transfers.

But yeah, it does have us scratching our heads a 2nd time (first was with how Lougheed Station would operate) - the "easiest" would have been to put the switch to the east of the station (but with capacity issues at Broadway & Commercial and at Metrotown and other stations, I think they are wise to create extra platforms. That PoCo platform won't be in use for 20 years, anyways.
