Following yesterday's construction update for the two-tower Mirabel project in the West End, we check in on the progress of another set of Henriquez Partners Architects-designed twins located just a few blocks away, this time developed by Westbank. Our previous update in August showed glazing installation had just begun on the recently topped-off buildings at 1661 Davie Street, and construction crews have been busy applying the skin of the project in the months that have elapsed.

The towering duo share a block with 1188 Bidwell, a 22-storey residential tower nearing external completion. The 319-unit rental project at 1661 Davie meanwhile greatly intensifies a one-acre site previously occupied by a Safeway supermarket, a liquor store and a strip plaza fronting the street. The Safeway will return to the property, taking over the elongated multi-level podium from which the towers rise.

Hosted on opposite ends of the property, the two buildings gently step down towards the middle, forming a terraced landscape where gardens and amenity spaces will be located. The two volumes feature floor-to-ceiling glass expanses and angled balcony embellishments that bring a textured rhythm to the exterior.

A batch of recent photos uploaded to our Forum show how the project looked in December. The tower crane has been removed, freeing up the silhouette of the buildings as glazing installation nears the upper levels.
