More than two years since our last update, the nine-storey residential project at 188 East 6th Avenue is finally above ground. This joint undertaking between the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Affordable Housing Agency, Catalyst Community Developments Society (CCDS), and Marcon Developments will transform a surface parking lot into housing, social services and retail space.

Designed by Rositch Hemphill Architects, the building will bring 145 below-market rental units with 50 percent targeted to families. The unit mix will consist of 29 studios, 43 one-bedroom, 43 two-bedroom, and 30 three-bedroom apartments.

The rezoning application was approved in October 2017 and included almost 1,000 square feet of commercial space. An amendment submitted to the City of Vancouver earlier this year proposes the conversion of a portion of the ground floor commercial space to a social service centre. The 9,541-square-foot social service centre will be located in floor space previously designated for commercial use, plus additional floor space on the first floor above the parking ramp and a new mezzanine between the first and third floors.

The city block-sized property is within a few minutes' walk of many amenities, including the Mount Pleasant Community Centre, several parks, shops, and restaurants. A 12,000-square-foot parcel at the south end of the site will become a public park, with design determined by the Vancouver Park Board.
