Royal Columbian Hospital, located in Westminister B.C. is in the midst of a massive expansion and redevelopment initiative. Spread out over a ten year timeline with three phases, highlights will include the construction of new facilities and the updating preexisting ones. When we last checked in on the project, construction was in full swing for the second phase of construction.
The first phase was partially completed back in 2016 with the introduction of new parking as well as a new heliport. Phase two of the project is a bit heavier on the construction side.
The second part of phase one began in 2016 and as scheduled to wrap up towards the end of 2019 and early 2020. This includes a new mental health centre to replace the aging Sherbrooke Centre. This new centre will offer 75 beds for mental health and substance abuse patients, a psychiatric high acuity unit, as well as the hospital's first older adult psychiatric unit. In addition, this phase will also feature the introduction of a new energy centre to support the hospital's growing utilities, including the 400 car underground parking garage.
The largest part of the project currently is the under-construction health centre. This nearly completed building features a partially glass, partially spandrel exterior that alternates colours creating a very visually pleasing experience for customers and passersby.
Phase two and three of the project are scheduled to begin in 2020 and 2023 respectively. These phases will include the introduction of projects such as the "acute tower" which will introduce hundreds of new beds to the hospital. More parking, a new emergency room, and additional renovations to the existing buildings will also be coming online at that time.
