Eighteen months since we last checked in at the site of The Shipyards Lot 5 redevelopment in North Vancouver, and progress has moved along considerably. The former Wallace Shipyard Burrard Drydock at the Foot of Lonsdale has been transformed, The Shipyards Lot 5 having taken the shape of two large structures - an open air multi-purpose public space and a mixed-use hotel and commercial structure - which now occupy the prime waterfront site.
Above, the historic, 1925-built machine shop has been disassembled and rebuilt, the open-air structure to cover a variety of active uses, including basketball and volleyball courts. Creating a sort of arcade or glass atrium effect, the re-imagined industrial building is a great example of adaptive reuse in action.
Next door, the multi-storey commercial component will soon become home to a 70-room boutique hotel built atop a two levels of retail, restaurants, and/or public space. The two adjacent structures will be connected via common second-storey terrace level in addition to a ground-floor connection accessible down below.
Part of a multi-faceted revamp of the North Vancouver waterfront, The Shipyards Lot 5 will be a central fixture. To be rounded out with a 12,000 sq ft skating rink, and a 140-stall underground parking garage, the development will be a significant boon to the Foot of Lonsdale neighbourhood and central waterfront district.
SkyriseVancouver will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
