A community open house was held on Monday, November 26 for what will surely become one of Vancouver’s most iconic buildings. The city has received an application to rezone 601 Beach Crescent to permit construction of a 54-storey mixed-use building. The irregularly shaped site is currently vacant, and is separated by the Granville Street Bridge onramp from the Vancouver House, which is currently under construction. Developed by Pinnacle International and designed by JYOM International and GBL Architects, the 163-metre building will include 303 market residential and 152 social housing units and 2,094 sq m of commercial space at grade.

The podium of the building shares the irregular site shape, while the curvy design of the tower is inspired by dancers in motion. Together with the Vancouver House, the 601 Beach Street project will form a visual gateway into the city. The proposal includes a landscaped public plaza with a network of pedestrian walkways, a bike path, seat walls, and benches. Several of the existing trees will be retained, and new shrubs, leafy perennials, and trees will be planted during construction and landscaping.

Amenities will include a common outdoor space located over several rooftop gardens, an outdoor pool, and over 1,000 sq m of indoor amenity space. The proposal includes 442 underground car and 970 bicycle parking spaces. The location is also well-served by public transit and is within walking distance of downtown, the seawall, multiple parks, and the Vancouver Aquatic Centre.

The open house drew a significant numbers of attendees. While some were supportive of the development, many expressed concerns over height, density, increased traffic, and the logistics of combining social housing and strata units in the same building. Attendees were able to provide feedback to City of Vancouver staff and applicant teams, and the City of Vancouver welcomes further comments on this rezoning application via an online feedback form.
