Following the City of Vancouver's open call for bike rack designs, a short-list of six finalists has been selected from among a total 450 submissions. From August 13-16, prototypes of each of the six finalists' designs will be installed at specific intersections around the city, which will be available for public testing. The public will be able to vote on their favourite designs, which in turn, will help inform a panel of judges who will make the ultimate decision and pick a winner.

North Shore Mountains

In no particular order, the first design is known North Shore Mountains, and was created as a tribute to the North Shore mountain range that frames the Vancouver skyline.

Guard Bird

Second, the first of two bird-related designs is known as Guard Bird, described as a friendly alternative to the more traditional guard dog.

Chickadee-dee-dee

One of the most versatile, the third pick comes in the form of Chicakadee-dee-dee, which can accommodate a variety of locks and locking methods.

Petal Rack

Fourth, the first of two flora-inspired designs comes in the form of the Petal Rack (pun intended), which was designed with an eye towards the city's green-friendly vibe.

Definitely Raining

Fifth on the list, the most basic, and thus perhaps most efficient design on the list is known as Definitely Raining, its raindrop-inspired shape and colour a nod to the drizzly weather for which Vancouver is well known.

Living Leaf

Last but not least, the sixth design, Living Leaf, was similarly designed with Vancouver's green reputation in mind, the design described as a tribute as well to urban sustainability.

Once again, the public are encouraged to come out and see the prototypes first hand and vote on their favourite at one of four locations, as listed below:

  • Aug. 13 from 3-7PM at Adnac and Vernon Plaza
  • Aug. 14 from 3-7PM at Arbutus Greenway and 10th Ave
  • Aug. 15 from 3-7PM at 800 Robson St
  • Aug. 16 from 11AM-2PM at Helena Gutteridge Plaza in front of City Hall
