Five months after excavation began at the site of Shigeru Ban's 19-storey Terrace House in Coal Harbour, the narrow lot has become a deep pit, as crews work tirelessly to prepare the site for construction. Located at 1255 West Pender, the downtown-area project by PortLiving will soon become North America's tallest hybrid wood-concrete-steel structure.

Before construction can begin, however, the site must be completely excavated and prepped, recent images from our Forum (reproduced above and below) highlighting the extent of progress to date.

The distinctive, terraced configuration of the structure, from which Terrace House gets its name, will feature a marriage of timber, concrete, and steel. Reaching a final height of 19 storeys, the composite structure will use concrete and steel throughout the first 12 floors, the 7-storey pinnacle to be made of wood.

In its finished form, Terrace House will be covered in ample vegetation, the majority of its 20 units to include outdoor space - or terraces - which will be provide sweeping views of the downtown skyline.

SkyriseVancouver will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
