On pace to give YYZ a run for its money in terms of passenger capacity by the early 2020's, YVR has announced an impressive $9.1 billion expansion and upgrade project which will go a long way towards ensuring that Vancouver International Airport continues to function and perform at optimal levels. Projected to reach 31 million passengers by 2022, it is not difficult to fathom that the time has come to expand the existing terminals in order to accommodate travellers as they pass through the airport.

Above, a rendering of one of the made-over passenger lounges planned for the International Terminal Building highlights the significant amount of natural light and openness that will be achieved by the designs. Visible through the glass, a mix of man-made and natural additions, such as a rock garden, water feature, and full-sized trees will be joined by both wooden and metal support beams, which themselves will be shaped to evoke a forest-like appearance.

Viewed above the YVR Terminal Expansion Map gives those interested in the scope of the project a good idea of where exactly all of the expansion efforts will be focused. Coloured in green, the expansions will all be carried out at each of the various ends of both of the existing terminal's many wings, thereby adding capacity for a mix of new lounge spaces and extra gates.

Seen above, Pier D is but one of several additions to be made to either terminal, the addition of extra gates to significantly boost YVR's capacity. Viewed below, the interior of the aforementioned new lounge space within the International Terminal Building will offer travellers a calm indoor space which will more than likely be a welcome respite from the usual hustle and bustle associated with modern air travel.

Funded entirely by the Vancouver Airport Authority (VAA), the multi-billion dollar project will come from airline and passenger fees, alongside non-aeronautical sources of revenue such as that generated by the McArthurGlen Vancouver Airport Outlet Mall.

SkyriseVancouver will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
