Vancouver's Development Permit Board granted their approval last month to a proposed 13-storey hotel at 833 West Pender Street, replacing the Edward Chapman clothing store beside the city's newest office tower. The 106-room hotel will have two levels of underground parking, a restaurant on the ground floor and a rooftop garden as an amenity for guests.

Designed by Studio One Architecture for Executive Group of Companies, the building went through a physical metamorphosis that changed the materiality of the facade. The Urban Design Panel has reviewed the proposal twice as a result. While the overall building configuration has generally remained the same, the first iteration devised a window wall facade accented by a random display of spandrel panels. The panel recommended resubmission to "consider context and orientation" and "improve the quality of the facade design and material treatment."

The 42-metre-tall tower returned with a white stone grid facade accompanying a regular pattern of windows as a nod to area's historical built form. The glazed portions have been upgraded to curtain wall, and there is greater consideration of the side wall, which is exposed as The Exchange hits its first setback. The building height had also been adjusted to reduce impact on residents in the Jameson Building to the north.
