After several key businesses left Vancouver's once-thriving Punjabi Market, the future of the neighbourhood was uncertain. Fortunately, several developments are promising to bring life back to this part of the city. The City of Vancouver has recently approved an application by SKA Property Inc. to rezone 6679 Main Street from commercial to comprehensive development. The development was approved under the Rental 100 program with 100% of the residential floor area allocated for secure market rental housing.

The new, six-storey building, designed by F. Adab Architecture Inc., will include 28 secured, market-rental units and 3,071 square feet of commercial space on the ground floor. It will contain two studio units, 13 one-bedroom units, nine two-bedroom units, and four three-bedroom units. This application exceeds the requirements of the "Family Room: Housing Mix Policy for Rezoning Projects," which mandates secured market rental projects include a minimum of 35 percent family units with two or more bedrooms.

The new building will provide 28 car parking and 42 bike parking spaces. It will also be well served by public transit and within walking distance of many shopping and dining options, several parks, the Sunset Community Centre, and Langara College.
