Plans to revive the Hollywood Theatre's silver screen are now in motion, as a local development company submits an application to reopen the historic Art Deco venue on West Broadway. The City recently received an application by 4184 Investments Ltd. to "re-introduce the Hollywood Theatre back into Vancouver's consciousness by creating and operating a beautifully renovated, state-of-the-art performing arts centre dedicated to bringing the creative arts to the local community."

The application also seeks permission for a six-storey residential building on the adjoining lot containing 40 units and retail at grade. The building reduces shadowing impacts on the single-family houses behind the site by stepping the north side. Setbacks on the lower levels allow for patios and landscaped planters to flourish.

The MAAStudio-designed project references the linear architectural expression of the theatre, rotating its vertical expression on the new building, which employs wraparound horizontal protrusions. Polychromatic soffits animate the building, and the ground-level setback reveals public art on the side of the theatre.

A community open house is scheduled from 4:30 to 7:30 PM on March 15 at St. James Community Centre Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue). The Development Permit Board will consider the application on May 14.
