The corner of Kingsway Street and East 11th Avenue is looking a lot more colourful thanks to an arresting public artwork installed along the spine of Vancouver's newest rental property. As cosmetic finishing touches are applied to the exterior of Edgar Developments' 14-storey project, named The Duke, a 60-foot-tall fuchsia sculpture hangs above the building's 11th Avenue entryway.

The 201-unit Mount Pleasant addition, designed by Acton Ostry Architects, will host nearly 4,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. Inside, an open-air circulation court is supported by perimeter rental units.

A vertical slot on the south elevation brings natural light into the atrium, while the newly installed sculpture, featuring 150 layers of translucent acrylic sheets, shields the interior from the rain.

An abstract interpretation of a raindrop, the suspended tower by artist Khan Lee bounces pinkish hues off the chamfered edges of the south-facing void and into the balconies of the central space.
