Before we rang in the new year, we asked the SkyriseVancouver community to take stock of how the city has changed by selecting their favourite buildings completed in 2017. Organized in two categories according to height, the year produced a number of skyline-defining landmarks that have raised the architectural bar, and our readers resoundingly confessed their love for the new additions.

In the 'buildings above 10 storeys' category, Vancouver's newest office building, The Exchange, beat the competition with over 45 percent of the vote. The integrated hotel and casino, Parq Vancouver, was a close second with nearly 40 percent. The second-tallest building in the city, Trump International Hotel and Tower, rounded out the top three. UBC's innovative Tallwood House placed fourth with almost a quarter of the vote, while the ultra-luxe 1245 Harwood settled for fifth. Aquilini Centre South's curvy balconies helped it place sixth, tying with Yaletown's 498 Drake Street. Epic at West, tied with FiveTen Seymour, eclipsed its sibling Tower Green at West

The competition was more fierce in the '10 storeys and under' category, which was topped by the colourful Crosstown Elementary. Separating first from second by a single vote, UBC's Aquatics Centre placed in the runner-up position, with almost 40 percent of voters selecting it as one of their favourites. The Spot on Cambie was the crowning residential project in the category, while the new Emily Carr University of Art and Design landed in fourth place. West Five and 1555 West Eight competed for the fifth spot, with Monarch at QE Park and Containers 2 amassing 9.09 and 6.06 percent of the vote respectively. A humorous jab at the city's housing crunch, one voter used the write-in option to nominate 'empty condos' in both categories.
