The last time we devoted a full front page story to the under-construction 12-storey residential building at 288 East Hastings, the project was just getting off the ground. A partnership between BC Housing and Wall Financial Corporation, the Endall Elliot Associates-designed tower will soon provide 104 units of non-market housing, 68 units of market housing, and 6,000 square feet of commercial space.
Wall Financial Corporation approached BC Housing in 2015 and proposed a partnership to develop a 172-unit affordable housing development. BC Housing then purchased the land from the developer and entered into a development agreement, subsequently providing a $39.5 million loan to construct the building. When complete, Wall Financial Corporation will purchase the 68 market rental units. To guarantee affordability, a housing agreement will ensure that rents in these units do not exceed the CMHC average market rents.
The latest construction photos from the site show glazing enveloping nearly the entire building, with brick piers and yellow spandrel accents adding texture to the facade. 288 East Hastings is expected to open for tenants later this year.
