With broader plans to build 600 new units of temporary modular housing across Vancouver to relieve homelessness, the province of British Columbia has announced the location of the first two projects under the $66 million initiative. The 78 new homes will be located in the Marpole neighbourhood on the Pearson-Dogwood site at 650 West 57th Avenue off of Cambie Street.

The City of Vancouver secured the land from previous owner and prolific developer Onni Group. Each of the two buildings will contain 39 units and will be constructed by Horizon North. Each home will be equipped with a kitchen and bathroom and measure approximately 250 square feet. The buildings will be outfitted with common amenity and laundry facilities for tenants. The first building is expected to be ready in early January 2018.

Mayor Gregor Robertson said the temporary modular housing project will go a long way in addressing the gap between the demand for affordable housing and the inadequate existing supply. The Pearson-Dogwood site will be the future home to 540 permanent social housing units. Roughly 1,000 new units of social housing will be delivered across Vancouver from now until the end of 2018.

"These 78 modular homes will get people out of the cold, wet streets and into a warm, dry and safe home to call their own," said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. "Our government is committed to reducing homelessness through both short and long-term housing initiatives and services and this partnership with the City of Vancouver and the non-profit sector is providing immediate solutions to those who need it most."

BC Housing has selected Community Builders as the non-profit operator for both of the buildings. Additional information can be found in the Database file linked below.
