Hi everyone,

I'm hoping to reach out to individuals/companies who are interested in collaborating on a city space in transition (either waiting to be demolished or built up). The idea is to activate an unused and vacant space with arts and community events in the late Spring - early Summer of 2019.

I'd love to talk further with people who might be interested in collaborating on creating a community wide arts event and make use of under-utilized space.

Several independent art companies are bringing back HIVE to coincide with the Magnetic North Festival in Vancouver 2019. We are currently looking for a space to house the project and a call out to artists in any discipline interested in working in a co-producing model.

Magnetic North was an annual national performance festival that occurred in Ottawa and every other year that would travel to other cities across Canada. From 2003-2016, this was a curated festival that included industry events and a series of shows culled from across Canada with feature performances from the host city. Unfortunately, in 2017 the festival could not surmount their financial deficit and the board at the time decided to cancel the festival indefinitely.

Now, under a new board of directors, Magnetic North will return to Vancouver in June 2019. They are envisioning a new model for this festival, where there is no Artistic Director curating a singular vision, rather it is a “potluck” of professional arts proposed by independent artists and producing companies. The festival will focus on executing a meaningful community engagement plan locally and through national and international networks. They are asking artists, presenters and producers to bring their work to the table in whatever stage of development it might be. They have identified The Cultch as the main hub for the festival, but they also plan to reach out to the surrounding communities.

HIVE was a performance event created by 11 of Vancouver and Victoria's creation-based theatre companies. In 2006, these companies created 11 intimate performances for audiences ranging from one person to twenty in The Chapel. The event used every corner of The Chapel, a converted funeral home that is now a venue and art gallery in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. A featured event in the 2008 Magnetic North Theatre Festival in Vancouver, HIVE 2 took over 2 warehouse spaces at the Digital Media Centre for a 9-day marathon of perspective-rocking, intimate, outrageous, and eclectic performances by 11 independent BC theatre companies.

Our goal is to find a building to house a collective of 7 - 12 artists/companies for 3 to 4 weeks. Artists and companies will use it for creation, rehearsals, community events, activations, happenings and art installations. Ideally the building would be a space in development (ie being torn down or built up). The public would be welcome to see the various processes taking place. To echo the values of the upcoming Magnetic North, one of our priorities is to invite the community in to the process, and to make process a main focus.

We also want to create community with other independent artists and companies - give time and space to see each other, let ideas cross-pollinate, provide opportunities for new collaborations. In addition to that, we want to make the new HIVE a very communal event, which could be hosting potluck dinners, skills shares, open-door rehearsals or other happenings that will take place before a more formal series of performances. The proposed dates of this project would be anytime between May 13 - June 16, 2019, ideally up to 4 weeks in space with a minimum of 2 weeks.

Cheers,
Brian
