Just off Bridgeport Road and near Vancouver International Airport, MYIE Group is charging ahead with construction on the Richmond International Trade Centre, a multi-use project that was approved for rezoning in 2013 and aims to create a new epicentre for business along the riverfront.

With the population expected to increase 19 percent from 2010 to 2021, Richmond is one of the fastest-growing urban centres in the Lower Mainland. Richmond's traditional city centre has been expanding northwards in recent years, with additional commercial space being provided along River Road North. Vacant and underutilized spaces are being overtaken by mixed-use developments that fully exhaust their potential.

The GBL Architects-designed Richmond International Trade Centre is using its locational strength to its benefit. Aiming to inject new life into a previously tired space, the well-rounded project includes two office towers and a retail podium that establishes a relationship with the street. Another tower will house the 110-room OPUS Hotel Versante, a boutique hotel experience which comes packed with a signature restaurant, sky bar, and the three-level China Club.

The public realm surrounding the footprint of the complex has been designed according to Dutch 'woonerf' principles, an elongated civic space where pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists are meant to co-exist on an equal plane. It will be some time before that aspect of the plan comes together; crews have focused on vertical construction so far, with glazing expected to arrive on the site shortly.
