A proposal to plant a 13-storey hotel in the place of the Edward Chapman clothing store will be considered by the Development Permit Board on June 26. Executive Group Development submitted the application to the City of Vancouver earlier this spring, seeking to build 106 hotel rooms and a restaurant on the ground floor at 833 West Pender Street.

The narrow site was acquired by Executive Group last year for $19 million. They are proposing to construct a 47-metre-tall building designed by Studio One Architecture that would have a charcoal black double-glazed window wall system accented by copper-coloured spandrel panels and natural limestone cladding.

If built, it would become the first new hotel in the downtown core since the completion of Coast Coal Harbour Hotel in 2010. The property is situated immediately west of The Exchange, which is predominantly an office building, but recently sought approval for conversion of floors two through 11 to hotel use. The unanticipated change in zoning covers 110,000 square feet of space.
