Ensuring the President's sons were met with a frosty reception, a large crowd of sign-toting protestors swelled outside the front doors of Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver as a much warmer ambience filled the ballroom of the brand new gleaming glass tower. There, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump joined Joo Kim Tiah, CEO of Vancouver-based Holborn Group and Malaysian property developer TA Global Bhd., in celebrating the grand opening of the long-awaited development.
Flanked by representatives and project stakeholders — politicians were notably absent — the event formalized the presence of the Trump brand in the city. Trump Hotels CEO Eric Danziger, clarifying a now-deleted errant tweet, said the building is the first hotel property to open in Vancouver in the last six years. And like Trump himself, it's bold and assertive — at 63 storeys and 188 metres, the torqued skyscraper is the second-tallest building in the city. When paired with the taller Living Shangri-La on the opposite side of West Georgia Street, the towering duo becomes a massive gateway to one of Vancouver's busiest and most important corridors.
"We are thrilled to open the doors to the finest hotel and tower in the city," said Joo Kim Tiah, CEO of TA Global Bhd., owner and developer of Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver. "Our goal was to create the best luxury hotel and residences Canada has ever seen as well as to reflect Vancouver's status as an international gateway city. We are confident that we've achieved this vision and are very excited to invite Vancouverites, hotel guests, and residents to enjoy this unparalleled hospitality experience."
The building's hyperbolic paraboloid profile follows in the footsteps of other famous twisting towers like Malmö's Turning Torso, which pioneered and mastered the form. Designed by late Canadian architect Arthur Erickson with Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership and dys architecture, the building contains 147 guest rooms and suites; Drai's Vancouver, the city's first poolside lounge; The Trump Champagne Lounge; Mott 32, a highly anticipated Hong Kong-based Chinese restaurant; The Spa by Ivanka Trump and 15,000 square feet of meeting and event space. With no visual indication of a switch in uses — the sleek exterior retains its expression from ground to sky — the building also contains 217 residences.
"Hotels are an important part of the fabric of each community by providing both career opportunities and driving the local economy," said Donald Trump Jr., Executive Vice President of the Trump Organization. "Trump Vancouver has not only created over 300 jobs but it will offer guests and locals exceptional hospitality as well as fantastic dining and entertainment. We are incredibly honoured to be a part of this world-class city."
