More than two years have passed since news first broke about the planned construction of a 26-storey, mixed-use tower designed by Henriquez Partners Architects for Bosa Properties at 1575 West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver, and work crews have since cleared the site and begun excavation.
The former site of a drab low-rise concrete office block, the prime location will be transformed to include 184 residential units sitting above 45,000 square feet of office space spread across three floors. The tower will rest atop a ground-level retail podium and seven levels of underground parking with space for 201 cars.
Located near Coal Harbour towards the West End, the new development is slated to join a collection of similar projects now underway in the vicinity, including 1500 West Georgia, also by Bosa Properties, and 1550 Alberni Street by Westbank.
Today the site is abuzz with activity as work crews prepare to dig deep. The excavation's close proximity to the waterfront could necessitate the use of pumps and other measures, and the planned seven-level underground parking garage requires a deeper than usual foundation.
While it will yet be several months before any above-ground construction can be seen, the completion of the project by 2019 will likely produce a welcome addition to the area. The project's bold design is part of a promising trend in highrise construction that has come to Vancouver in the last few years.
SkyriseCities will be sure to return to this project as progress continues. For more information, check out the associated Database file and Forum thread, and as always, feel free to join the conversation in the comments section below.
